What is Legal Translation?

Legal translation refers to the the translation of texts within the field of law. Because law is a culture-dependent subject field, legal translation is considered to be one of the most challenging specialty area, combining the creativity of literary translation with the terminological precision of technical translation. Problems in legal translation may crop up due to the specificity of legal language, differences between legal systems and the regional nature of legal terminology.

The job of translating a legal text into a foreign language is, therefore, littered with a series of obstacles, and therefore only professional translators specializing in legal translation should translate legal documents and scholarly writings. Most forms of legal writing, and contracts in particular, seek to establish clearly defined rights and duties for certain individuals. It is essential to ensure precise translation of these rights and duties in the translation. Legal document translation may also involve Patents, Certificates of Accuracy, Witness Statements depositions, trusts, wills, articles of incorporation, litigation documents, immigration documents, property/exhibit labels and in some cases attendance in court by the translator(s). The risks involved in hiring a translator who does not specialize in legal translations could involve the mistranslation of a passage in a contract, leading to lawsuits and huge expenses.
